Methods, issue 3
Methods is a speculative contraceptive catalog created in response to the bizarre disparity between the high stakes of reproductive rights and the way that contraceptives are advertised to women. Rife with comically generic imagery and messaging, birth control ads could just as easily be selling yogurt or yoga pants. For each issue, we send out invitations to artists and designers whom we think would be interested in participating. Contributors are friends and friends of friends. In this regard, Methods is also about growing feminist networks. The prompt is simple; design a full page ad for the contraceptive method of your choice. The responses are always varied—from abstinence to freezing eggs to pulling out to witchcraft. None of them would be mistaken for a Yoplait™ ad.
The third issue of Methods features interviews with Abigail DeAtley, Director of Development at PPNYC, and artist and activist Marilyn Minter.
